Watson on Whitley and Langstaff

By Ian Appleyard | 10th May 2019

Manager Steve Watson says it is 'vital' to have a crop of good young players in his squad next season.

Watson was speaking after goalkeeper Ryan Whitley, 19, and striker Macaulay Langstaff, 22, both agreed to sign new deals with the Minstermen.

"If this club is going to move forward the way I want it to go, it is vital that we have a crop of good young players who compliment the more experienced group," said Watson.

York-born Whitley made his senior debut only last month and played the final five games of the season. Langstaff scored 12 goals last season including five in seven games following a loan spell at Bradford (Park Avenue).

"Ryan is a York lad with a bright future. He has great attributes - height, calmness, presence - and he is not afraid to come for crosses," said Watson. "For a big lad, he also makes good saves around his feet. He has still got a lot of work to do but he could turn into a very good goalkeeper.

"It is important at any club to have players who come through the ranks and do well," he added. "During my time at Newcastle, when we were flying under Kevin Keegan, we had about half-a-dozen young players who had grown up as fans of the club. I am looking for other players from in-and-around the area who fit the bill because I know our supporters would love to cheer them on."

On Langstaff committing to the club again next season, Watson said: "I am pleased that Macaulay has decided to stay and I think he has made the right decision.

"He is an intelligent striker who makes greats runs. He came back from a loan spell at Bradford and scored five goals in seven games. He was also involved in most of our other goals creatively.

"He wasn't happy sitting on the sidelines last season and wanted to go out on loan," he added. "But I only wanted him to go out for a month to get his confidence and his sharpness back and it worked perfectly. Hopefully next season can be a big one for both him and the club."
