Watson ready for early 'challenge'

3rd July 2019

Manager Steve Watson is looking forward to the challenge provided by City's opening games of the new season.

The Minstermen will take on four of last season's play-off qualifiers in their first six games including Altrincham, away, on the opening day of the season.

Brackley Town, Blyth Spartans, and Spennymoor Town are also on the agenda for City before Watson's former club Gateshead - who were demoted from the National League last season - visit Bootham Crescent on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Speaking to the club website this afternoon, Watson said: "I don't worry too much about the fixtures. We have got to play everybody. Arguably, it could be a good thing playing one of the the best teams in the league last season (Altrincham) away from home.

"Hopefully, we will have a good pre-season up until then and have a lot of confidence going into it. It's about getting out of pre-season with a bit of momentum and starting quick.

"We have got three or four teams who finished in the play-offs - who finished a lot higher than us last season to play to start with - so, obviously it's a big challenge for us now.

"You have to play everybody at some stage. Away against Altrincham is a big challenge - they finished in the play-off positions and gave us a really good game here. Like all teams, they have strengthened. It will be tough but a challenge we are looking forward to."
