Watson on Hartlepool United test

16th July 2019

Manager Steve Watson believes Wednesday night's friendly against Vanarama National League side Hartlepool United (kick-off 7pm) at Bootham Crescent will be a good barometer of his side's potential this season.

The Minstermen have played Leeds United and Bolton Wanderers in their first two pre-season games but Watson knows tomorrow's game against a side just one division higher up the football pyramid will be more revealing in terms of preparation for the Vanarama National League North campaign.

"I am looking forward to Wednesday's game. I think it will be much closer to what we are going to face week-in, week-out against the top teams in our league," he said.

"Obviously, Hartlepool are in the league above and are very good team in the league above," he added. "But it's going to be a little bit closer to the style and the speed of play that we are going to be playing against next season from the top teams. It will be a really good test to see where we are at."

Trialists Josh King, Billy Beresford, and Liam Smith are all likely to figure for the Minstermen in tomorrow's game along with striker Macaulay Langstaff and summer signings Steve McNulty, Peter Jameson, and Dan Maguire who sat out Sunday's 1-0 victory over Bolton.

Winger Wes York, striker Jake Wright, and defender Jake Watson are rated 'doubtful'.
