VIDEO: Steve Watson interview

26th July 2019

Steve Watson spoke to the club website ahead of Saturday's friendly against Notts County at Bootham Crescent (kick-off 12.30pm).

"I think it will be a very good test and there are still places up for grabs," he said. "Every manager will tell you the same - you want to be judged on the team you have put together, not somebody else's team.

"The players I have decided to keep this summer are players I think can take us to that next level. As manager, people have to trust me with that. The players I have brought in are players I think can improve us. I am really happy with the business we have done."

Watson, who has been running the rule over five trialists in pre-season games, hinted at the possibility of one more signing before the start of the season.

He also confirmed that striker Jake Wright is joining Vanarama National League North rivals Boston United on a long-term loan deal.

A proportion of the proceeds from Saturday's game are being donated to the Headway charity in support of Daniel Parslow who announced his retirement as a player this week due to a head injury.

Commenting on Parslow's decision, Watson said: "It's sad news - especially someone who is so close to the hearts of the York City fans.

"Ultimately, Dan's health and family are far more important than football. A lot of clubs employ ex-players as ambassadors, we are moving to a new stadium, so I certainly think it's something everybody would think about."
