VIDEO: City's latest new arrival

Defender David Mirfin trained with his new team-mates at Bootham Crescent this morning after arriving on loan from Mansfield Town for the rest of the season.

Manager Steve Watson welcomed his addition to the ranks saying: "We needed a leader at the back, somebody who is vastly experienced and mentally very strong. I think he will be good for everyone.

"At a time when we need a bit of solidity at the back, and we need to get back clean sheets, he will help in that respect.

"We are quite lucky to have him really," Watson added. "I had a good chat with (Mansfield manager) David Flitcroft who thinks the world of him.

"Once I spoke to David himself about the project here - what we are trying to do this season and what we are looking forward to in the future - he was right on board and he is exactly the type we need."

Sheffield-born Mirfin, 33, has played over 450 games in the Football League and won promotions with Huddersfield Town and Scunthorpe United.

He missed the majority of last season following knee surgery but has been playing reserve team football regularly this season.

"I have come back from a long term injury at Mansfield and got to the stage now where I have been playing reserve games and I am ready for competitive football," he said. "Hopefully, I can go straight into my stride on Saturday and the fans can see what I am all about.

"I am a no-nonsense centre-half, I think I read the game quite well, and I look forward to the physical side of it," he added. "If I get the ball at my feet, I am quite comfortable with it. I am not a screamer and a shouter but I lead by example and hopefully the lads can learn off me.

"I have played here before when this club was in the league and I was at Huddersfield. I know what the support is like, what it is like as a club, it's past, and I know it's a massive club especially for this league."

Mirfin, meanwhile, has not ruled out the possibility of extending his stay, saying: "Hopefully. A lot depends on how I come back from this injury. The aim is to play the next 15 games and take it from there."
