VIDEO: Academy manager Spencer on reserves

By Ian Appleyard | 8th November 2017

Academy manager Mark Spencer spoke to the club website following yesterday's reserve team defeat against Mansfield Town.

Spencer, who is now over-seeing the development of young talent at Bootham Crescent, took charge of the reserve side alongside goalkeeper Jon Worsnop.

Youth team manager Steve Torpey, who will normally be in charge of reserve team games this season, was away on a Football Association coaching course.

Although City lost 5-0 to the Stags in the Central League North fixture, Spencer says he was 'proud' of the way the club's youngsters competed against a team packed with League Two professionals.

"Initially, I thought the performance was really good," said Spencer. "Mansfield came with a really strong side with a lot of League Two professional players in their ranks.

"To say we only had four first team players (Luke Simpson, Jassem Sukar, Theo Wharton, and trialist Tyler Walton), and the rest were all scholars - they have done really well to compete physically as well as technically. We were really proud and pleased with the whole squad.

"This is the whole reason why we wanted the reserve leagues back," he added. "It's why we did it last year and why we are doing to again this year - to give these boys, who are under 18 and 17-year-old scholars, the opportunity to play against these big players from different clubs.

"Goals are goals and are easily fixable. It's a learning curve for the players. There were some individual errors, some small unit errors - but that's what happens in football. Hopefully, they will learn from it," he said.

Commenting on his job as Academy manager, Spencer said: "It's been going really well. I have actually been doing the role for quite a while now, standing-in, just making sure that everything is in order and functioning properly.

"It is a real honour to be in charge of such an Academy, one that performs really well at weekends. I really want that structure in place for the parents, the players, and the club itself."
