Toughest pre-season, fittest team

By Ian Appleyard | 27th June 2018

Martin Gray has warned his players to expect the 'toughest pre-season' of their lives.

City returned to pre-season training this morning after an eight week break and will have just over five weeks to prepare for the start of the Vanarama National League North season.

Summer signings Russ Penn, Jake Wright, Jordan Burrow, Wes York, Tom Allan, Kallum Griffiths, and Macaulay Langstaff were all involved in the 90 minute session at Wigginton Road.

Midfielder Simon Heslop was back in action after recovering from a hernia operation along with midfielder Clovis Kamdjo who missed the majority of last season with a knee injury and is training with a view to securing a new deal.

"It's a fresh start for everyone and we have had a fantastic 'Day One' back," said manager Gray. "I have been really pleased with the levels of fitness they have come back with. I am really excited.

"It's about being sensilble and building the programme up. You are not going to go running up-and-down hills but, equally, you are not going to go for gentle walks," he explained. "Day-by-day we will be stepping the programme up.

"We understand what we have got to do this season. We have got to make sure that we are the fittest team in this league," he said. "We are going to have the toughest pre-season these players have ever come across and, hopefully, we will get the rewards for the work we put in."

Gray, meanwhile, paid tribute to the club's groundstaff who have spent the summer improving all the pitches at the training ground.
