Torpey hails Ryan's senior debut

By Ian Appleyard | 10th October 2017

Youth team manager Steve Torpey has hailed striker Ryan Edmondson's first team debut as a 'massive achievement.'

The Harrogate-born striker (pictured above, right) is now the third youngest player in City's history after being introduced as a second half substitute - aged 16 years and 140 days - by new manager Martin Gray against Brackley Town last weekend.

Only Reg Stockill, who scored the club's first ever league goal in 1929, and defender Lee Grant, who played only two minutes as a substitute in April 2002, were of a younger age when playing senior football for the Minstermen.

Stockill was aged 15 years and 281 days and Grant aged 16 years and 116 days.

Torpey said: "I am really pleased for Ryan because he has worked his socks off to get that opportunity. To make your first team debut aged 16 is a massive achievement which also reflects well on the coaches who have worked with him through the years.

"He has been around the first team for a few weeks now and is very level-headed. But it is difficult when you make your debut at that age because the adrenalin is pumping so much. I remember my debut was not that great!

"Hopefully, he will build on this now," Torpey added. "He has got 20 minutes under his belt and he can focus more on his performance next time."

Striker Flynn McNaughton, meanwhile, took his tally to four goals in two games as City's Under-18s fought back to draw 2-2 with Carlisle United last weekend in the EFL Youth Alliance League Cup.

McNaughton, 17, was brimming with confidence after an impressive display four days earlier against Harrogate Railway Athletic in the FA Youth Cup.

A draw, however, was still not enough to secure City qualification from the group stage of the competition as they finished runners-up to Hartlepool United.

City play host to Notts County this Saturday in the Youth Alliance League North East (kick-off 11.30am) at Wigginton Road before returning to action in the FA Youth Cup against Salford City at Bootham Crescent on Tuesday night (kick-off 7pm).

City line-up v Carlisle United: Whitley, Dyer (W.Jackson 75), Lawrence, Ward, Rogerson (C), Watson, Berry, Haswell, McNaughton, Harrison (Overton 65), N.Jackson. Unused substitutes: Wilton, Hickey.
