Sean seeking 'better times' for City

By Ian Appleyard | 4th February 2019

Sean Newton wants to help bring 'better times' to the club after celebrating his 100th City appearance with a goal.

Speaking to the club website ahead of tomorrow night's Vanarama National League North game against Hereford FC at Bootham Crescent (kick-off 7.45pm), Newton, who scored City's opener against Alfreton Town last weekend, said: "To play 100 games at any club is an achievement, especially at a club like this.

"It's a great club and I have enjoyed every minute of it - apart from the results! When we win, like on Saturday, it's unbelievable, especially with the fanbase we still get. Hopefully, we can have better times than what we have had."

Reflecting on the last couple of months, Newton - who has been in-and-out of the side - said: "I had an injury in December and, when I came back, it went again. There were rumours that I had 'refused to play' but I know myself that I didn't. I have got more about me than that.

"I would never refuse to play for any club - especially this one, which has looked after me so well, and I enjoy it here. It was a tough time but I got through it, we got three points, and I have helped with a goal.

"No-one likes getting abuse or being told things that aren't true," he said. "It made me think - 'I have got a point to prove here, I do want to be here' - I have just had to bide my time."

Having played in a variety of positions since his move to the club in October 2016, Newton says he enjoyed his return to the left wingback role under new manager Steve Watson.

"That's where I played quite a lot when I first signed," he reflected. "I have played most of my games there and I enjoy getting forward and I like to chip in with a few goals. All I can do is try me best and see where it takes me."

Newton says City's next two games against Hereford and Ashton United are 'massive' if the club wants to climb the table and challenge in the top half this season.
