Ryan's delight after City debut

By Ian Appleyard | 8th April 2019

Goalkeeper Ryan Whitley spoke to the official club website after making his debut for the Minstermen in Saturday's home victory over Southport.

York-born Whitley, 19, had spent the majority of the campaign sitting on the bench as first-choice Adam Bartlett clocked up 70 consecutive first team appearances.

However, Bartlett missed Saturday's game due to illness - offering Whitley a long-awaited opportunity to play for his hometown club.

The former Archbishop Holgate pupil is now hoping to stay in the side for Saturday's trip to Chester.

"It was surreal. I have been watching City since I was nine-years-old so to finally get on the pitch and make my debut, I was over the moon," he said.

"I got a phone call from the goalkeeping coach (Andy Collett) about half past ten on Saturday morning saying 'Barts' was ill and I was playing! Making your debut is always going to be nerve-wracking. I was nervous but a good nervous.

"It was a solid back five performance and they never really looked like scoring. There weren't (any scares) apart from the first second of the second half where it just skidded over me - but it was never going in. The manager has said 'very well done, solid game, just carry it on to next week'.

"The play-offs are a bit far away now so, hopefully, I might get a run of games," he added . "I have had to be patient all season but I do feel ready and I think I showed I could cope with it. I am obviously a young lad and I might make mistakes but I think I can cope with most of it."
