Penney on club's 'tough' decision

20th August 2018

Sporting director Dave Penney has spoken about the departure of manager Martin Gray and the appointment of Sam Collins as caretaker-manager.

"It was a tough decision for the board and a tough one, personally, because I have had a working relationship with Martin for 15 years," he said. "It was a culmination of results and performances."

Penney revealed that Collins, who joined the club as youth team manager this summer, is likely to have a minimum of five games in charge. He will be assisted by Stuart Parnaby who also joined the club this summer as strength and conditioning coach.

"We didn't plan for this happening and we hoped it wouldn't happen," said Penney. "But in the short-term, they will take on the running of the team. Hopefully, they do well and put us in a position as a board where we have to offer them the job or not.

"We are eight points off the top - which we are not happy about - and eighth in the league, which we are not happy about. It's up to Sam, Stuart, and the players to do something about it and start picking points up and we will all be happy."
