Penn first new arrival of summer

By Ian Appleyard | 8th May 2018

Former York City captain Russell Penn has today returned to the club after leaving Vanarama National League side Gateshead.

Midfielder Penn, 32, made 109 appearances for City between January 2014 and May 2016 and was a popular figure with the club's supporters.

He helped the club qualify for the League Two promotion play-offs in 2014 and also scored the goal that secured the club's Football League survival in 2015.

Penn joined Carlisle United following City's relegation to the National League in 2016 but made only two appearances for the Cumbrians and spent the majority of his one year deal on loan with Gateshead and Wrexham.

He subsequently joined Gateshead on a permanent deal last summer and was a regular in their side during the 2017-18 campaign.

Originally from Dudley in the West Midlands, Penn started his career as a youth player at Birmingham City before turning professional with Scunthorpe United. He has also played for Kidderminster Harriers, Alvechurch (loan), Burton Albion, and Cheltenham Town.
