Obituary: Gordon Morritt

By Ian Appleyard | 21st November 2018

York City Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former goalkeeper Gordon Morritt aged 76.

Gordon made 52 appearances for City between 1969-1972 and was a member of the squad that won promotion from the Fourth Division under manager Tom Johnston.

Born in Rotherham, Gordon joined his local club Rotherham United as a teenager and made 88 appearances for the Millers between 1961-1966.

He helped the club reach the 1961 League Cup final and, although he did not play in the inaugural two-legged fixture, he was awarded a medal.

He became established as Rotherham's first-choice goalkeeper during the 1964-65 season but also played regularly as a striker in the club's reserves. He made one first team appearance as a centre-forward in a midweek League Cup tie against Swansea City.

Gordon left Rotherham in 1966 to join South African club Durban City but returned to English football the following season at Doncaster Rovers.

After a spell at Northampton Town, he joined City in 1969 and made his debut in a 3-1 defeat at Oldham Athletic on November 8.

He kept his place for the rest of the 1969-70 season and played 12 games at the start of the 1970-71 promotion winning season.

After leaving Bootham Crescent, he played for both Rochdale and Darlington.

Gordon stayed in the York area after his retirement from football and worked as a police officer for five years before moving into security work.

He spent time as a greenkeeper at Pike Hills Golf Club and helped out as a kitman for York Rugby League Club in the mid-1990s.

Everyone at York City sends their sincere condolences to Gordon’s family and friends at this sad time.
