Newton voted Clubman of the Year

24th April 2019

Sean Newton will be presented with the 'Billy Fenton Memorial Clubman Trophy' prior to Saturday's final game of the season against AFC Telford United at Bootham Crescent.

Newton, who also lifted the Trophy two seasons ago, polled 17.29 per cent of supporter votes and finished narrowly ahead of fullback Kallum Griffiths (15.58%) and striker Jordan Burrow (13.01%).

The former England 'C' international, 30, started the 2018-19 season employed at leftback and wearing the captain's armband.

He briefly lost his place midway through the season and was also sidelined by injury but, after being switched to centreback by new manager Steve Watson, he duly responded with a string of impressive performances.

He has started 34 games this season, scoring six goals, and made his 100th appearance for the club in February.

Newton initially arrived at Bootham Crescent on loan from Wrexham in October 2016 and signed a permanent deal three months later. He was voted 'Clubman of the Year' at the end of the 2016-17 season.

He also made over 100 appearances for Saturday's opponents Telford between 2009-2012.

Congratulations, Sean!
