New signing Green on City move

By Ian Appleyard | 17th May 2019

New signing Kieran Green is setting his sights on promotion after joining City from Vanarama National League North rivals Blyth Spartans.

Midfielder Green, 21, stepped down a division to join Blyth last summer from Gateshead but suffered the agony of defeat in this season's promotion play-offs.

He now aims to challenge for promotion next season with the Minstermen and says the experience gained at Blyth can only work in his advantage.

"I like to work hard. I feel if I work hard, the performances come," he said. "I played 40 odd games last season for Blyth and I feel as though I matured. I got the experience, I learned a bit more about the league and about myself, and I will bring all that coming here.

"You have got to aim for promotion," he continued. "That's what the fans will expect, it's what the Gaffer and Micky would expect, and we will expect it as players. If everyone is pulling in that direction, hopefully we can succeed."

Green, who worked previously under City manager Steve Watson and assistant Micky Cummins at Gateshead, said: "As soon as the Gaffer approached me, it was a formality getting it sorted. It's hard to turn down a club this size and I have worked with him before so, as soon as there was a bit of interest, I was all in."

Assistant-manager Cummins says Green has a lot to offer the club and also has the potential to play at a higher level of football.

"He compliments the midfielders we have got in there already and he has got the right attitude," said Cummins. "We are really pleased to get him. He's got an old head on young shoulders and he has got the potential to play higher, hopefully with us.

"He's got lots of attributes, he is physical, he covers a lot of ground, and he likes going into duels," added Cummins. "He has played the deep role in midfield, the attacking role, he scores goals and he creates goals. He's got a lot to offer the group."
