Minsterbelles hit six past Sunderland

By Olly Wood | 17th October 2021

A perfect hattrick from Sophie Tinson helped City extend their unbeaten run to five in the North East Regional Women’s Premier League.

Following a big 5-1 win away at South Shields last weekend York came into the game full of confidence against the only other unbeaten side in the division.

York were fast out of the blocks trying to get an early lead, not letting West End get any time on the ball.

However, it was the visitors who had the first effort on goal, Chloe Precious did well to save from close range to keep the game level.

A minute later City launched an attack, a long ball in behind the defence caused problems, Shannon Durkin snuck in and managed to poke an effort past the keeper to put York ahead.

The Minsterbelles didn’t rest on their laurels, eleven minutes in and it was two, Tinson managed to get on the end of a corner at the near post flicking a header past the keeper.

Then came a goal of the season contender on the quarter of an hour mark, an outstanding passing move with almost every player involved ended with Tinson controlling the ball on her head before unleashing a powerful volley with her left foot netting her second of the afternoon.

After building up a three-goal advantage City looked to control the game for the remainder of the first half and did so well, limiting the visitors to very little, Jo Symington did really well to cover and prevent West End’s clearest opening as the City backline largely went untroubled.

Like the first half York came out strongly in the second 45, less than five minutes in Rebecca Fevers fired from range but her strike clipped the crossbar.

Less than 60 seconds later Fevers had her goal, a brilliantly struck free kick found the top corner and City increased their lead to four.

53 minutes in the Minsterbelles created two good chances to extend their lead, firstly Tinson worked an opening in the box before looking up and squaring for Holly Findlay but the latter just couldn’t reach the cross. Then Durkin saw an effort deflect just wide of the post.

Ten minutes later York got their deserved fifth, Symington fired in a half volley from ten yards following a corner City managed to keep alive.

York weren’t done there and neither was Tinson who looked to have secured her hattrick only for a finger-tip save from the keeper.

Five minutes from time City scored their sixth and Tinson completed her perfect hattrick, a powerful strike with her right foot from inside the box crashed in off the underside of the bar.

In the final minute West End managed to create their only shot on goal all game, the ball struck the top of the bar on the way over and the clean sheet stayed intact for York.

Another good win for the Minsterbelles who host Newcastle United next weekend in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup Third Round Qualifier.
