Minsterbelles complete the double

By Olly Wood | 15th May 2022

City complete the double over local rivals Harrogate Town winning both games 5-1.

York survived an early scare in the seventh minute, Chloe Precious’ kick was charged down, the ball fell to Monique Watson who couldn’t hit the target with her shot which dragged wide of the post.

Three minutes later Sophie Tinson saw an effort cleared off the line as the game started frantically, a brilliant ball from Rebecca Fevers put the number nine in, Tinson rounded the keeper and from a tight angle she saw her shot blocked and cleared by a covering defender.

In the 13th minute the visitors came back again, Precious was on hand to save with her legs keeping the score level.

As the game approached the midway point in the first half City started to turn the screw, firstly in the 20th minute Milly Ash was denied by the keeper who reacted quickly to parry Ash’s volley from inside the box after the skipper Nikki Brown picked her out with a cross.

Ash again tried her luck in the 26th minute, her shot wasn’t too far away as it went over the bar.

Just before the half hour mark the deadlock was broken, Ash found Rebecca Hunt who stayed composed before finishing into the corner giving York the lead.

In the 34th minute the Minsterbelles doubled their advantage, this time Rebecca Fevers was the scorer turning brilliantly to evade two defenders before coolly slotting home.

City were in no mood to stop there, four minutes later Fevers fired from distance but the Harrogate keeper was equal to the effort.

In stoppage time at the end of the first half York got their third and Tinson her 31st in the league this season. Abby Parkin unselfishly squared for the striker who tapped into an empty net.

After ending the first 45 with a goal York picked up where they left off scoring almost instantly in the second half, Tinson again as she picked out the corner with her strike putting the Minsterbelles out of sight.

Only a minute later Ash again took aim, her shot deflected wide of the far post as a chance for a fifth goal went begging.

In the 54th minute City got their fifth and Tinson her hattrick, a powerful left footed strike which went through the keepers’ legs.

Shortly after the heavily involved Tinson was denied her fourth of the afternoon, a well hit shot was blocked by the keeper as the Harrogate stopper got the better of Tinson on this occasion.

After 63 minutes the visitors pulled one back, Hannah Freibach the scorer stretching to slide in Nat Eustance’s ball into the box.

The final chance of the game fell Harrogate’s way, in the 79th minute a dangerous strike bounced narrowly wide of Precious’s goal.

The final whistle brought an end to the season at home for York who have just two remaining league games this season starting with a trip to Wakefield AFC on Sunday, kick off at 2pm.
