Minsterbelles beat promotion rivals Redcar

22nd November 2021

A hard-fought 4-2 win sees City extend their unbeaten run to nine games after beating second placed Redcar Town Ladies.

Goals from Ellie Hall, Sophie Tinson, Karli Smith and a late Shannon Durkin strike made sure York came away with the three points.

Like last weekend against Sheffield Wednesday City started fast and found themselves two goals up in the first 20 minutes again.

Six minutes in Hall opened the scoring like she did last weekend, the winger met skipper Nikki Brown’s inch perfect cross in the centre of the box to side foot into the bottom corner.

In the 19th minute City had their second, Tinson managed to turn well in the box before sliding the ball into the far corner, passed the on rushing keeper to double York’s advantage.

The first 20 minutes or so were dominated by the Minsterbelles who were pressing effectively from the front and making it difficult for the visitors.

Chloe Precious was however called into action in the 24th minute to produce a double save, firstly getting down well to her right to palm away and then saving and holding a second effort on target.

A minute later Redcar hit the upright, the ball bounced back into the centre of the box and the rebound was well blocked by Brown on the line to protect the York lead.

It would take until the 38th minute for the next chance, it fell to Redcar as they pulled one back, a powerful strike managed to beat Precious.

Four minutes later and the visitors were level, a long ball in behind put the striker through and the shot found the bottom corner to equalise.

On the stroke of half time the Minsterbelles had their final attempt of the half, Jo Symington powerfully fired at goal forcing a good save from the goalkeeper.

The sides went into the break level although it didn’t take City long to get back in front, seven minutes into the second half Karli Smith put York back ahead.

The defender finally poked the ball home after a goal mouth scramble including a Tinson shot which was well saved and an Elisha Hardcastle effort cleared off the line.

Down the other end Redcar hit the woodwork again, this time the crossbar from a well struck free kick from distance.

From the hour mark onward City regained some of the control they’d had in the first 20 minutes with substitute Alice Hughes helping dictate the tempo a little more in the City midfield.

The next two efforts City were both from Rebecca Fevers, the first in the 70th minute, a shot from outside the box was saved and held by the keeper. The second in the 81st minute from a free kick which had power but the same result as her earlier attempt.

With little over five minutes to play City turned to the bench, Holly Findlay was replaced by Shannon Durkin, the sub was immediately involved setting up Brown whose shot was saved by the keeper.

Precious had little to nothing to do in the second half but a couple of corners came and went from the visitors with York looking to hold their precious and slender lead.

City confirmed the win in the 90th minute, Durkin showed great composure to bring the ball under control before rounding the keeper and slotting home after getting on the end of Tinson’s flick.

A dogged win for the Minsterbelles against a fellow promotion hopeful, an important three points with another big game coming up next weekend as City travel to play another promotion contender in Harrogate Town next Sunday, kick off 2pm.
