City Ladies put six past Hartlepool

By Olly Wood | 6th December 2021

The Minsterbelles extended their unbeaten run to ten thanks to a 6-1 win over Hartlepool with Sophie Tinson netting her fifth hattrick of the campaign.

Having had an enforced two week break after storm Arwen postponed the away trip to Harrogate Town City were keen to carry on their good run of form in recent weeks.

Less than five minutes in York took the lead, Jo Symington delivered a ball from the left which went all the way through to Holly Findlay who fired a half volley passed the keeper into the corner.

Just after going ahead City almost had their second, again Symington forward on the left delivered a dangerous cross which the keeper couldn’t hold, Rebecca Fevers almost profited but the keeper reacted to deny the shot before Elisha Hardcastle struck just wide from the edge of the box.

After dominating the opening exchanges and not letting Hartlepool out of their own half York got their second just before the quarter of an hour mark, Findlay played a neat one-two with Fevers after Abby Parkin won the ball back, Findlay drove down the right and picked out the skipper Nikki Brown who slid the ball passed the keeper.

In the 22nd minute the Minsterbelles extended their lead to three, Alice Hughes cut out the ball in midfield before beating her marker, her through ball wasn’t dealt with by the onrushing goalkeeper and Findlay pounced to score her second of the afternoon.

30 minutes in, the visitors registered their first attempt on goal, a free kick from distance was on target but Chloe Precious took comfortably.

A minute later Tinson was denied well by the keeper from close range after the striker was picked out in the centre of the box by Findlay who’d again got in down the right.

City finished the half strongly, like they’d started the game, Tinson added a fourth in the 41st minute. Parkin’s throw found Hardcastle in the box who crossed, after a scramble the ball found Tinson who worked some space before firing low into the corner.

On the stroke of half time the Minsterbelles scored their fifth and Tinson got her brace, a long kick forward from Precious was flicked on by Fevers for Tinson who drove through 1-on-1 with the keeper, the striker calmly slotted the ball home.

Five minutes into the second half York scored their sixth and Tinson got her hattrick, again, Symington did well on the left before looking up and picking out Tinson who turned smartly and shot passed the keeper.

Findlay was denied her hattrick 15 minutes into the second half by the offside flag as Symington just drifted offside on the left before squaring for Findlay to tap in.

City continued to dominate the half without managing to increase their comprehensive lead as the game ticked into the last ten minutes.

In the 83rd minute substitute Shannon Durkin was bundled over in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, up stepped Durkin but the attacker fired wide from twelve yards.

Hartlepool pulled one back late on, a corner was kept alive by the visitors before a shot managed to beat Precious and deny City a clean sheet.

Another important win for the Minsterbelles maintaining the lead at the top. Next up is a trip to Ossett United, Sunday 12th, kick off at 2pm.
