Gray hopes to complete third deal

By Ian Appleyard | 19th October 2017

Martin Gray is hoping to complete his third new signing as City manager before Saturday's trip to Salford City.

Gray refused to reveal the identity of the player or his position but said: "We are looking to strengthen the squad between now and the weekend. Hopefully, we will have one in by tomorrow. If all goes right, this afternoon, we will have another addition to the squad."

Leeds United goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, on a month's loan, and Darlington leftback David Ferguson have already joined City since Gray took over as manager at the start of the month.

This weekend, City visit second-placed Salford in a game which is viewed by many as a 'six-pointer' in the battle for promotion in Vanarama National League North.

"There are six, seven, or eight more teams who will be pushing all the way but, yes, this is a big game," Gray admitted. "I have never been a manager who has gone anywhere thinking a point would be a good result. We will go there with a gameplan aimed at coming back with three points."

Gray took his former club Darlington to Moor Lane on the opening day of the season and picked up three points after a 2-0 victory in which Ferguson scored both goals.

"We got them early in the season when they probably were not quite settled in - which is always a good time to play them," reflected Gray.

"They had gone from part-time to full-time and brought in 10-15 players who were still finding their feet. They were always going to get better - which they have done - and we will be really respectful of that."

City - who also beat Salford five weeks ago in the FA Cup - have picked up four points from Gray's opening two games in charge and are currently sixth in the table.

Gray confirmed that winger Aidan Connolly is back in contention after missing last Saturday's 2-2 draw at Leamington with a muscle strain.

"Everyone is getting fitter," he said. "We have had another week on the training ground and there have been lots and lots of positives. Week-by-week, we will get better."

Striker Michael Rankine (illness) and midfielder Clovis Kamdjo (knee) are the only players unavailable this weekend.
