Gaffer targets FA Trophy progress

By Ian Appleyard | 23rd November 2017

York City manager Martin Gray is aiming to extend the club's impressive record in the FA Trophy.

The Minstermen begin their defence of the trophy at home to Coalville Town on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

Although he is planning to make changes to his side, Gray has stressed that he wants to win the third qualifying round tie and move a step closer to Wembley.

It is now six months since City beat Macclesfield Town in last season's final having also won the competition in 2012 when beating Newport County.

“I will pick the team that I feel will win us the game," he said. "You want to take it as far as you can and who wouldn’t want to go to Wembley? What a fantastic achievement. The one thing the club had to shout about last year was a great day out and I am sure you all drove back home from London very proud to have the trophy.

"You want to do it for the fans, you want to make sure that you continue that great success we had at Wembley, and it starts on Saturday," he added.

Opponents Coalville are currently 16th in the Evo-Stik Premier Division table having lost eight of their last nine league games.

Gray, however, will not be under-estimating the part-timers from Leicestershire, saying: "We have worked on their strengths and weaknesses and we have a gameplan.

"Mentally, we know we need to come out of the blocks and put on a real strong performance. I’m expecting a very tough game and we’ll be treating them the same as if we were playing Salford."

Gray revealed that wingback Sam Muggleton could be leaving Bootham Crescent before the weekend.

Muggleton has now completed a month on loan at Boston United and played for City's reserves on Wednesday against Walsall.

"He is available to go on loan and available for a permanent move," said Gray. "We have had two or three clubs on this week and he's got the opportunity to go where he feels is right for him. He needs to get some football. Hopefully, that will come before the weekend."

Gray also confirmed that striker Michael Rankine would be allowed to go out on loan following his return to light training.
