Foundation Tour over 1,000 schoolchildren at LNER Community Stadium

By Dan Simmonite | 28th January 2022

York City Football Club Foundation have been busy organising stadium tours to local schools in York, with over 1,000 children attending over the past few months.

The schools’ visits have been a part of the Foundation’s sporting heritage project which started in 2018 – aiming to commemorate Bootham Crescent and look ahead to the new stadium.

650 children attended the club’s old ground before the pandemic hit and in the past two months, the LNER Community Stadium has welcomed 18 schools and 1,000+ young people to the new home of York City Football Club.

All children were given a free ticket to this Saturday’s game against top-of-the-table Gateshead in an effort to inspire a new generation of supporters in the city.

Foundation Manager Paula Stainton said: “The key with all that we do is engaging with people and a wider community in all that we do – getting them engaged with the football club.

“Most of [the kids] have not had the opportunity to come [to the new stadium] – it’s been great to get them in and have a look around, take part in physical activity which is really important and engage with new schools and the opportunities that brings so we can build even better relationships.

“We run a lot of activities from lunchtime to our Premier League Primary Stars sessions and our afterschool activities. Those link in with our community initiatives as well so it’s great to keep building those links – we work with well over 100 schools in North Yorkshire every season.”

We look forward to welcoming our new set of supporters tomorrow afternoon at the LNER Community Stadium. Kick-off is 3pm against Gateshead.
