Fergie returns from England camp

By Ian Appleyard | 11th October 2017

Defender David Ferguson will return to the club tomorrow after three days away on 'international duty'.

The former Blackpool and Sunderland defender has been training with the England 'C' squad at the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall.

Manager Paul Fairclough wanted to assess his players ahead of the International Challenge Trophy final against Slovakia next month.

Fairclough will finalise a 16-man squad in the next couple of weeks and Ferguson, 23, is hoping to win his third cap for England's 'non-league' side.

"It was a great experience and I think I did alright," said Ferguson, who made his City debut against Brackley Town last weekend following his move from Darlington.

"We trained on Sunday and Monday and played in an 'in-house' game on Tuesday. We have also been doing a lot of tactical work over the last few days, watching videos of Slovakia, and analysing how they play and how we want to play.

"The final squad has not been announced yet but, if I am playing well for York, I see no reason why I won't be called up again. I played twice in the summer and I was made captain for the second game against Jersey."

Kidderminster Harriers and Blyth Spartans are the only other National League North clubs who had representatives at the England 'C' training camp.

Ferguson, meanwhile, is now looking forward to training again with his new City team-mates ahead of Saturday's away trip to Leamington.

Reflecting on his debut in the 2-1 victory over Brackley, he said: "It was brilliant. First and foremost, you want to win the game but first impressions are also very important and I wanted to be solid and make no mistakes.

"I really enjoyed the game and the boys were great," he added. "I got forward when I could and think I played well. It was good to get the win and now we have got to build on that."
