Fergie and England lose in Slovakia

By Ian Appleyard | 9th November 2017

David Ferguson is due back in training tomorrow after playing the full 90 minutes for the England 'C' side against Slovakia Under-23s.

The England 'non-league side' were beaten 4-0 in the final of the International Challenge Trophy on Wednesday evening.

City wideman Ferguson won his third cap as one of only four players representing clubs from Vanarama National League North.

The Slovakian team featured players from top European sides including Benfica, Sampdoria and Lille.

England's hopes of victory suffered a major blow just before halftime when Blyth Spartans fullback Andrew Cartwright was sent off for an ugly challenge on Sampdoria midfielder David Ivan.

Paul Fairclough's side were only trailing 1-0 at that stage after a goal from former Manchester City and Wigan Athletic youngster Filip Orsula, who now plays for Slovan Bratislava.

Playing against ten men, Slovakia took control of the contest in the second half with goals from Ivan, Michal Fasko (who plays for Swiss club Grasshoppers) and Wolves midfielder Christian Herc.

Speaking this afernoon, York City manager Martin Gray admitted that Ferguson's absence on international duty has been 'disruptive' to preparations for Saturday's game at Alfreton Town.

He will train with his City team-mates for the first time this week tomorrow (Friday).

"It is a disruption - because you have a full week working without a player," he said. "And it must be very difficult at the top end when you have got four or five away from a squad.

"But who doesn't want to play at international level?" he added. "It doesn't matter whether it is the 'C' team or the first team - it is a very proud and privileged position to be in."
