Diggers start work at Monks Cross

4th December 2017

Chairman Jason McGill expressed his delight this afternoon after work officially started on construction of York's new Community Stadium.

Diggers have moved onto the site at Monks Cross where the new 8,000-capacity stadium and leisure complex is scheduled to open in the summer of 2019.

The stadium will become the new home of both York City Football Club and York City Knights Rugby League Club.

The project includes a swimming pool, gym, dance studio, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities, and a sports hall with spectator seating.

A commercial development on the stadium site will feature a cinema complex with IMAX screen, five restaurants, and up to three retail units.

NHS outpatient services will also be offered on site from a community hub and there will be a new Explore library and a York Against Cancer retail unit.

City chairman McGill said: "We have waited a long time for this day to arrive so, naturally, I am delighted to see that work is getting underway at Monks Cross. It is great news for everyone associated with York City Football Club."

Councillor David Carr, Leader of City of York Council said: “It is fantastic that construction workers are now on site delivering a Community Stadium and leisure complex for all our residents to enjoy. We have always been committed to delivering the Community Stadium and accompanying facilities which will be a great asset for the city.”

Councillor Ann Reid, interim executive member for leisure, culture and tourism said: “It is great to see workers on site so soon after we announced that all the necessary agreements were in place. As well as providing top class community and leisure facilities for our residents, with new jobs and significant investment, it will bring huge and long-lasting economic benefits to the city.”

Contracts were signed last month to begin the build and operation of the new Community Stadium and leisure complex.  Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd are the building contractor and will be responsible for on-site safety.
