Watson reflects on FA Cup draw

By Dan Simmonite | 23rd October 2019

City were drawn against fellow National League North side Altrincham on Monday in the Emirates FA Cup first round draw.

The two sides will meet on the weekend of 8-11 November 2019, exact date depending on TV scheduling, with the League fixture against Hereford to be re-arranged on a date TBC.

After being drawn against Alty, manager Steve Watson said: “There’s a lot of easier draws out there but I’m just delighted to be at home again.

“The atmosphere and the occasion against Stockport was brilliant and hopefully we get a similar atmosphere and get a similar performance out of the players – if we do that then I’m confident about progressing even further.

“They haven’t started the way they have wanted to and I’m quite surprised at that, but I know what they are capable of and I’ve seen enough of them to know that they can cause a lot of problems the way they play.

“But we will be fully aware and will be well up for it – as much as we were for Stockport.”

City started their FA Cup journey against Irlam in the second round qualifying and have since beaten both Buxton and Stockport County live on BT Sport to reach the first-round proper of the competition.

The Minstermen could have drawn teams as varied as Chichester City and Sunderland but drew Altrincham at Bootham Crescent – a team City beat 3-1 earlier in the season away from home – albeit a result Watson won’t be looking too much into.

The manager added: “We are in a good frame of mind at the moment and don’t fear anybody – we would have went into a game against a Sunderland or anybody like that still fancying our chances.

“Now that we have a team in the same League as us which we’ve already played this season we would be confident, but we certainly won’t be thinking too much into it for the next couple of games.

“We have got a massive two games coming up now for us in the League and it’s full focus on them.”
