Statement: Monday’s Main Stand Closure

29th August 2019

York City Football Club would like to apologise for the closure of the York Pullman Main Stand and associated areas at Monday’s home fixture against Gateshead.

Kick-off was delayed to 3:15pm due to significant traffic delays on the A1 Southbound, A19 and A64 causing problems for key staff and personnel travelling to the game.

The Club were presented with various options, with the recommendation that the plan we moved forward with was the safest and best solution to avoid the game being called off.

A decision was made to house Main Stand, Family Stand and enclosure season ticket holders in the Popular Stand, with the option of standing in the David Longhurst end.

The lack of stewarding available at Bootham Crescent raised major health and safety concerns and as a Football Club we were not willing to risk the wellbeing of our supporters – therefore it was deemed best practice to close the Main Stand, Family Stand and associated areas.

We understand the frustrations from supporters and would again like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to our loyal fanbase.

Discussions continue with our stewarding contractor and we will work to find a solution to where this situation will not happen again.

Despite the issues regarding the Main Stand, we would like to thank the near 3,000 home supporters for the positive atmosphere created with a flag display against Gateshead, a sight that Steve Watson and the players were pleased to see.

However, we must highlight that the two flares/smoke bombs which were used pre-match in the David Longhurst stand put those in attendance at risk and puts the Club in a difficult position with authorities.

We would like to remind supporters that such devices are illegal in football stadiums.
