Spratt savours first team opportunity

By Dan Simmonite | 30th August 2019

Summer signing Harry Spratt made his debut for the Minstermen in Monday’s 1-1 draw to Gateshead, coming on as a second half substitute and showing glimpses of his ability on the left side of defence.

Speaking on his performance, Spratt said: “I had a decent little spell of 30 minutes, it was quite a tough game to get involved in, but I think I did well with what I did and was neat and tidy on the ball.

“I’ve played left back in my time and centre back as well so I think I’m quite comfortable in either position.

“I’m looking to impress the gaffer, be patient and then wait for an opportunity - I want to play as many minutes as I can and get into the team.”

19-year-old Spratt also played in a youth team friendly on Wednesday and is settling in well after signing his first professional contract this summer.

Spratt added: “It’s been very good; the boys have welcomed me well and I’m enjoying it.

“I came to train with York a few times over summer, I liked the setup and the manager liked what he saw in me then gave me a contract.”

Spratt played for the under-18s setup at Premier League Manchester United before spending last season at Huddersfield Town, where he developed into more of a centre half in the Terriers’ under-23s side.

And the versatile defender has cited York City as the perfect club to further his experience with senior football after niggling injuries reducing opportunities in Manchester and West Yorkshire.

He explained: “They are both big clubs and I enjoyed my time there, but I think I needed a change to mens football.

“I had two injuries in academy football, one to my knee and one to my ankle, both quite unlucky impact injuries but I’m back from that and can hopefully kick on.”
