"On the Spot" with Amari Morgan-Smith

By Ian Appleyard | 30th August 2017

"On the Spot" is the new feature on the official York City website where the club's players take part in a light-hearted question-and-answer session covering a wide range of issues!

Amari Morgan-Smith is the latest player in the hotseat and the City striker reflects on the possibility of time travel, his 'selfie' with boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather, and the time he was 'caught short' playing for Ilkeston Town!

On a more serious note, he admits that he should have listened more closely to advice from England's current assistant-manager Steve Holland at Crewe Alexandra.

"He always used to say 'no matter how talented you are, hard work is always the way forward'. At that age, I was heading in the right direction at Crewe but I probably thought I was 'ahead of the game' a little bit and thought I was going to get a pro contract.

"I played up at college and wasn't as well-behaved as I should have been. That side of things ruined it for me really. My career, maybe, could have gone a different way, who knows?

"But he always used to say 'on and off-the-field, hard work will always come into action' and I didn't really take that into consideration.

"I would pass that (advice) onto any of the younger lads," admits Amari, now 28. "If you are good ON the pitch, you still have to be hard working and good OFF it."
