Ryan Edmondson moves to Leeds

By Ian Appleyard | 15th November 2017

YORK CITY striker Ryan Edmondson has completed a move to Leeds United.

The teenager, who has spent the last two years in City's Academy, has signed scholarship terms with the Championship club.

City manager Martin Gray says the deal is 'fantastic' news for the club and the player.

"I think it is fantastic for everybody. He's definitely worthy of the opportunity to play at that level as a future Championship and, potentially, Premier League player," said Gray.

"He's gone to the right club - the set-up and the environment he's going to is great and he is a 'Leeds boy' so it makes a lot of sense and it's really exciting.

"When an opportunity like this comes along for any young player, you don't want to stand in their way.

"It shows how strong our Academy is and how it continues to be strong going forward. Steve Torpey (youth team manager) and the Academy staff put a lot of work in at grass-roots level developing players from a young age."

Edmondson made his first team debut for City only last month - as a substitute in manager Gray's first game in charge against Brackley.

His appearance - aged just 16 years and 140 days - made him the third youngest player in the club's history.

Gray is confident that Edmondson has the attributes to shape a big future in the game.

"He's got all the tools," said Gray. "There's so much to work with. He's six feet four or five, quick, and very aggressive.

"He's not like a lot of modern-day Academy players. He is very much 'old school'. There is a long way to go to polish up his technical side but, hopefully, we will see an outstanding centre forward in the future."

The deal includes a number of financial incentives related to Edmondson's performance at Elland Road which could benefit City further in coming years.

City, who recently took young Leeds goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell on a month's loan, are hoping to strengthen links with Leeds at Academy level going forward.
