Penn: "It's time to put things right"

8th May 2018

Former York City captain Russell Penn is back at Bootham Crescent - after becoming manager Martin Gray's first new signing of the summer.

Penn has returned to the club after a two year absence but, in many respects, the all-action midfielder has never been away.

Although playing for three different clubs since his departure - Carlisle United, Wrexham, and Gateshead  - Penn still lives in York and has also spent time coaching the club's Academy Under-13s.

"It was a no-brainer," he said. "I still live around the area and it's a place I call 'home' now. In football terms, I am buzzing."

Reflecting on his previous spell at the club (January 2014-May 2016), Penn said: "I have fantastic memories. Unfortunately, we ended on a relegation but I would like to think that, during my two and half years, the fans saw what I was capable of.

"I was committed and we got into the League Two play-offs. I scored some good goals here and worked with some very good people.

"It's a new era now. We have a lot of bad luck in the last couple of years, you could say, but it's time to put things right. The club isn't where it should be - but everyone says that now!"

Penn has stressed that he would not be coming back to Bootham Crescent if promotion was not on the agenda next season.

"From what I am hearing and the news I am getting from the manager, we are going to be really competitive next year and right up there.

"I wouldn't be here otherwise. That's my sole aim this year. Obviously, 24 teams are going to be saying the same thing - and the proof will be in the pudding - but, put it this way, I am looking forward to coming back.

"I have scored some great goals here and played in front of some very good crowds. The fans took to me and I took to them. I have got some great memories but I now want to re-live them."
