Opening day loss for City

5th August 2017

York City 0 AFC Telford United 1

YORK City opened the season with a 1-0  home defeat against AFC Telford United.

Striker Matthew Barnes-Homer scored the decisive goal for the visitors at the end of a first half that had been dominated by the Minstermen.

Jon Parkin had struck the crossbar for City with a header and both defender Hamza Bencherif and striker Amari Morgan-Smith had been denied by impressive United goalkeeper Jas Singh.

Although City created fewer opportunities after the break, wingback Josh Law was unlucky not to equalise with a freekick in the 90th minute.

Law’s curled effort looked to be heading for the roof of the net until goalkeeper Singh managed to tip the ball over the crossbar.

City manager Gary Mills handed full debuts to summer signings Jon Worsnop, Josh Law, and Louis Almond while Connor Smith, Theo Wharton, and Jassem Sukar started on the bench.

Striker Michael Rankine missed the game due to a muscle injury suffered in training on Friday.

A crowd of 2,951 attended the game, which included 149 visiting supporters.
