New captain Newton a 'born leader'

24th July 2017

YORK City manager Gary Mills has described Sean Newton as a 'born leader' following his appointment as club captain.

Newton, 28, joined the Minstermen last season from Wrexham where he had also worked under Mills as captain.

Although the pair were reunited at Bootham Crescent nine months ago, Mills opted to leave the captaincy in the hands of Simon Heslop until the end of last season.

“It’s something that I have delayed,” Mills reflected. “I thought about doing it at the back end of last season but I didn’t think the timing was right. Simon was doing well on the field.

“Although he is not a natural leader, like Sean, now is the time to do it,” Mills asserted.

“It’s nothing against Simon. It’s the way football is. You have certain ‘leaders’, you have players that actually are better captains than others. I believe Sean Newton will be a better captain than Simon Heslop because he is a born leader.”

The City squad, meanwhile, is currently away on a training camp in Leicestershire and visit United Counties League Division One side Oakham United in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday night (kick-off 7pm).
