Mills: City moving in the right direction

21st July 2017

YORK City manager Gary Mills believes the club is moving in the 'right direction' with two weeks to go before the start of the new season.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's friendly at Grantham Town (kick-off 3pm), Mills confirmed that he is pleased with the look of his new 18-man squad.

"We believe we are going in the right direction, we believe that the players that we have got are the right players at this moment in time," he told the club website.

"There is a couple of weeks to go until the start of the season - and the most important thing is August 5 and three points at stake - but there will be no other players coming in, unless we pick up two or three injuries. We are really pleased."

After watching his side concede eight goals against League One title favourites Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night, Mills is preparing for a 'different test' on Saturday afternoon at the South Kesteven Sports Stadium.

"When you lose 8-0, we take the positives from it in our fitness levels," he said. "It’s always disappointing and never very, very nice when you lose 8-0 but you get on, you move forward, and you stay positive. We played against a very, very good side.

"It will be a different test (at Grantham)," he commented. "As I have said to the players - before we even started pre-season - we are going to have a lot of different tests this year. We are going to have to be mentally strong, we are going to have to be excited about every challenge ahead that we have got this season.

"We go to Grantham - which has got a running track around it," he said. "How do you, as a player, prepare when maybe the atmosphere is not the same as it was the other night? Different things like this, when you are a professional, a good player, a good team, you deal with all these situations."

City's trip to Lincolnshire, meanwhile, offers Mills the opportunity to return to the club where he started out on his managerial career 21 years ago.

During a two year spell as player-manager (1996-98), Grantham won the Southern League Midland Division title and also reached the quarterfinals of the FA Trophy.

"That was my break into management, that was my first job," he recalled. "And I had a very, very successful time there.

"It was a great club, a nice little club, that we were looking to go forward with," he said. "We were quite a few leagues down but we got promoted and we got to the quarterfinal of the Trophy.

"Crowds went up from 200 to 1,200 and it was a good time at Grantham. So I have got a lot of good friends there. We are staying there for a few days, meeting some nice people, and hopefully getting a good game out of it."
