McNaughton Scores In City Draw

Flynn McNaughton
By Phil Howden | 12th March 2018

York City Under 18s came away from their latest Youth Alliance League fixture away at Oldham Athletic with a creditable 1-1 draw.

All five of the Youth players who featured in the previous Tuesday evening’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough Under 23s in the North Riding Senior Cup featured in the starting line-up at Oldham’s Chapel Road training ground.

The early stages of the game were fairly even on a very heavy pitch. City keeper Ryan Whitley made a good save down to his left in the open 15 minutes to deny Oldham the best chance of the opening period.

Oldham went in front from a counter-attack that resulted after a York corner. The Lancastrians broke, scoring at the near post after the ball was arrowed in from the right.

Just before half-time there was an incident where an Oldham player was sent off for pushing Harry Thompson after a 50/50 challenge.

City, now with a man advantage, started the second half brightly and equalised when Zak Lawrence’s corner was driven to the far post, and Flynn McNaughton finished smartly with a side-footed finish through the crowded goalmouth. The goal brings McNaughton’s tally to 12 goals for the season for York City in all competitions.

From then on it was an offensive game, with both sides going for victory. Both teams created good chances to win the game, with York going closest through Josh Berry who hit the inside of the post. A combination of pitch conditions and poor finishing meant that neither side could find a winning goal, the game ending all square.

Youth Manager Steve Torpey reflected on the match.

“I was pleased with the result. It was a good result against a team who were third in the league. The conditions were difficult. We’ve only lost one in six now, which is a good run of form. Hopefully we can keep this going until the end of the season.

“It wasn’t a great spectacle to be fair, and the game lacked that little bit of quality. There were no real stand-out individual performances but it was a good, solid team effort.”

Next up, the York City Under 18s face Chesterfield at the Wigginton Road training ground on Saturday 17th March (kick off 11am).

York City: Whitley, Kemp, Lawrence, Haswell, Rogerson, Watson, Berry, Thompson, McNaughton, Overton (Dyer 80), Steels (Harrison 70). Unused Substitute: Wilton.
