Life-long City fan appointed as new Club Historian

30th December 2020

A life-long York City fan, who went to his first game in 1974, has been appointed as the club’s Historian, a voluntary role which will see him provide historical referencing for the club.

As the club prepares to move out of Bootham Crescent and with a centenary year approaching in 2022, keeping the club’s memories alive is increasingly important. The club were keen to appoint a trusted point of contact who could champion City’s long and proud history.

Here enters Paul Bowser, who has keenly shared his love for football and York City, publishing a book in 2019 entitled ‘Bootham Crescent: A Second Home’. His interest in archiving footballing history led to the club asking him to take on this role, which he keenly agreed to.

Speaking on his new role, Paul said: “I’m thrilled to take on this position, and hope to build on the wonderful legacy established by the late David Batters and many others.”

From January 2021, Paul will be called upon in a number of different ways such as offering historical detail, helping to recount past events and adding depth and perspective to all manner of club activities, projects and decisions.

Paul said his main mission is to preserve and promote the club’s heritage alongside acknowledging how important football is socially. The game has generated conversations over the decades in pubs, stadiums and homes, providing people with a sense of belonging. This togetherness led Paul to take on the role.

Paul added: “My aim is to represent like-minded enthusiasts who will be just as keen to share their knowledge, as we collectively continue to explore and document the history of our great club.

“I’m really looking forward to the new role as now, more than ever, I think there is so much to look back on and so much to look forward.”
