Kieran Kennedy signs for City

By Dan Simmonite | 13th August 2020

Kieran Kennedy becomes Steve Watson’s second signing of the day after his release from Port Vale.

The centre-half started his professional career with Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership before spells with Macclesfield Town, Shrewsbury Town, and Wrexham – spending last season on loan with the latter in the National League.

Upon joining the club, Kennedy said: “I’m delighted, I spoke to the gaffer before I signed and it’s a really ambitious club.

“I had a few clubs interested but he told me about the future aspirations for the club and what the plan is for the next couple of seasons and as soon as he told me I was excited and sold on the club straight away.”

The 26-year-old played 7 times for England U19s back in 2011 and credits his development to his time in the youth teams at Manchester City and Leicester City.

Kennedy is a right-sided center back, but is equally comfortable at right-back or as a defensive midfielder, and the new recruit was keen to put emphasis on his style of play: “First and foremost, clean sheets is what any defender wants. I also like to get on the ball and play from the back,” he added.

“As long as you are on the pitch you are happy really but obviously it was good to play at [League] level and test yourself against the best but there’s players at every level who are capable of playing higher.

Speaking on the upcoming season, Kennedy said: “I can’t wait, there’s everything in place now to push on and hopefully we can start that next season by getting promoted.”
