Kempster feeling confident after regaining form

13th March 2020

Forward Alex Kempster is confident his side can beat anyone as York City approach the end of the season.

Having started the season in good form, Kempster was scoring goals whilst the team picked up results in the opening months. However, the forward slipped out of the first team for a brief period as his form dipped.

He said: “It was a good start for us. As the team was doing well, I think I benefitted. But no, it was really good early on. The team were providing me opportunities and things were falling for me and I was putting them away.”

“Being out of the team is one of those things. I wasn’t scoring the goals at that point, but it is good to be back amongst it now and hopefully I can pick up from earlier this season.” Kempster added.

The 24-year-old has now scored two in his last two outings, with one against Hereford and Alfreton. Despite this, Kempster is far more interested in seeing the team pick up results.

“Two goals in my last two is a great feeling. Unfortunately, one result wasn’t good enough. I’m less bothered by my own record, as long as the team is doing well, that is enough for me. As long as we win the game, that is the main thing. Hopefully I will get a few more before the end of the season to help the team push on,” added Kempster.

City now have just eight games remaining and could move five points clear should results go their way on Saturday. Kempster admitted that each game is like a cup final for the team as the season nears its conclusion.

He explained: “It has come around fast, now we are down to eight games. So, we have got eight cup finals really to hopefully put pressure on the others. Obviously King’s Lynn have a couple of games in hand, but we need to just keep picking up points.”

He continued: “When you see York City top of the league regardless of how many games played. You just have to keep focussed on what we can do with our game.”

With King’s Lynn currently two points behind and with three games in hand, Kempster feels it is important to focus on City’s games and keep the pressure on them.

He added: “Obviously you keep an eye on the results around you. However, as you can’t affect them you just have to keep picking up the points to put the pressure on them. We have to win our games and we will see where that takes us. If we keep winning then any slip from them will cost them.”

Kempster concluded by saying that he believes the squad is capable of getting the necessary results that would see City promoted: “We have got a very good side and I think we are capable of beating anyone on our day. When we play well we are exceptional, and I believe we could pick up a result against anyone in this league.”

“I’m confident we will do enough, but I’m also confident we would win the playoffs with the team we’ve got.”
