Jameson: "I’ve got a great connection with the fans already."

7th September 2019

Pete Jameson says his time at Bootham Crescent has seen him have his best ever start to a season, as he looks eagerly ahead to today’s National League North fixture against Southport.

Jameson has kept an impressive five clean sheets in his opening nine games for the club, and his backline currently boast the division’s best defensive record.

He said: “When I was at Blyth, we hadn’t started well, so to start well here at York is nice - we know we want to be up there at the end of the season, so to start as we mean to go on has been great.

“I’m really enjoying it; the lads are great, and I’ve got a great connection with the fans as well already.

“Everybody from myself, to the strikers, we all work hard to keep a clean sheet, and with Steve and Micky, we work to be the best in the division defensively, because we know at the other end that we can score goals.”

This weekend’s visitors Southport travel to York on the back of three defeats in their last five games but Jameson remains wary of the Port, who started the campaign strongly.

He said: “It’ll be a tough game, they’re a full-time side, so they will be well organized, I know a few lads who play for them.

“They started really well, I know their goalkeeper (Dan Hanford) and he’s a good keeper and he keeps clean sheets too. Obviously, every game in this league is a challenging one and we won’t be taking anything for granted.”

The City shot stopper was also quick to commend the supporters for their fantastic following during Tuesday evening’s 0-0 draw at Guiseley.

He said: “It was great support for an away game, that’s incredible and I wouldn’t be surprised if we visit more places this season and we’re backed by a similar number.”

Touching on the impact of the club’s younger players, Jameson said: “Steve (McNulty) has been a big miss in the last few games but I think that the lads who have come in, both Josh King and Harry Spratt have done really well and have deserved their chance.”
