Jackson on target against Grimsby

21st August 2017

Noah Jackson and Ryan Edmondson were on target as York City beat Grimsby Town and secured a first victory of the season in the EFL Youth Alliance North East.

Steve Torpey's side had lost their opening game of the season against Bradford City and drawn against Rotherham United.

But it was a case of third time lucky for the young Minstermen who also shook off the setback of conceding a goal just 20 seconds into the game.

"It was probably the quickest goal I have seen in a game that I have been involved with," said Torpey. "It was a shock to the system and it took us 25 minutes to really stamp our authority on the game.

"But I never thought we would lose once things settled down. I had the confidence in the guys to turn it around and get something out of the game.

"We started to play some good stuff, we scored two well-worked goals in the second half, and it was quite comfortable in the end."

Wingback Jamie Higginbotham delivered the crosses from which both Jackson (pictured) and Edmondson headed home

Torpey praised his side's defensive performance with centrebacks Josh Rogerson and Joe Kemp both impressive against a tall opposition centre forward.

Stressing the importance of a first win, Torpey said: "I had said to the guys that it was time to start turning our performances into wins because, if they get the chance to move up to the first team, it's all about winning games of football. We want to get into that 'winning mentality' and they managed the game really well towards the end."

Next up for City's youth team is a trip to Hartlepool on Saturday morning in the group stage of the EFL Youth Alliance League Cup. City are drawn in a group that also includes Morecambe and Carlisle United.

"We are on the road for first time this season and really looking forward to the game after a good win," said Torpey.

City, meanwhile, will play neighbours Tadcaster Albion in the first qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup at Bootham Crescent on Wednesday September 6 (kick-off 7pm).

Admission for spectators will be £3.00 Adults and £1.00 Concessions.
