Honours even at Bootham Crescent

By Ian Appleyard | 15th August 2017

York City 0 Darlington 0

A CROWD of nearly 4,000 watched York City end Darlington’s 100 per cent start to the season in an action-packed goalless draw tonight at Bootham Crescent.

The Minstermen became the first team to stop the Quakers’ scoring for 29 games and have now conceded only one goal in the opening four games of the National League North season.

Striker Michael Rankine hit the crossbar with a header just before the interval and Darlington goalkeeper Adam Bartlett produced fine saves to deny Rankine and Sean Newton in the opening 15 minutes.

However, striker Mark Beck struck the post early on with a header for Darlington and midfielder David Syers also struck the crossbar with a shot seven minutes from time.

Rankine volleyed over after stretching to meet a cross from Josh Law in the 67th minute and referee Simon Mather waved away a penalty appeal moments later when Amari Morgan-Smith tumbled under pressure from Leon Scott.

With striker Jon Parkin again ruled out by a calf injury, City manager Gary Mills had named an unchanged side.

Winger Aidan Connolly made his first appearance of the season after injury as a second half substitute.

Although the game finished goalless, this had been an absorbing contest with plenty of goalscoring opportunities and no lack of energy from both sides.

The crowd of 3,944 included 1,041 away supporters.
