Good point for City youth

16th August 2017

A GOAL from Flynn McNaughton secured York City’s youth team a 1-1 draw against Rotherham United last weekend in the EFL Youth Alliance North East.

Youth team manager Steve Torpey said: “We did really well against a big physical team. We rose to the physical challenge and had a real good go. We created some good chances and probably deserved to win the game.”

With Joe Kemp ruled out by a muscle strain, Jake Watson came into the side at centreback.

Both Charlie Ward and Jamie Higginbotham, who are Under-16 players, showed ‘no fear’ against the older age players, according to Torpey.

“The goal was quite direct,” he added. “Ryan Edmondson got a good flick and Flynn showed his strength to knock the centrehalf off the ball and then pace before producing an excellent composed finish from 12 yards out. Ryan also created a couple of chances and was unlucky not to score.”

Next up for City’s youth team is a home game against Grimsby Town on Saturday.

City’s Under 13s and Under 14s, meanwhile, both put up creditable performances in defeats against Sunderland on Tuesday at Wigginton Road.

City also took four sides to Bishop Burton College to play games against Hull City. The Under 9s lost 6-3, the Under 10s drew 8-8, the Under 11s lost 4-2, and the Under 12s won 6-2.

Next week, the Under 9s, 10s, and 11s are playing both Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

City line-up V Rotherham United: Whitley, Berry (Higginbotham 51), Jackson, Watson, Rogerson, Lawrence, Ward, Thompson, Edmondson, McNaughton, Haswell (Overton 84). Unused substitutes: Harrison, Wilton, Lingthep.
