Gaffer lines-up third new addition

By Ian Appleyard | 9th May 2018

Martin Gray is hoping to unveil another new signing tomorrow after completing deals in the last 48 hours for Gateshead duo Jordan Burrow and Russell Penn.

The City manager has not revealed the identity of his target but says he is an 'attacking winger' who will contribute goals.

Gray is now rebuilding his City squad after releasing nine players and three loanees and has stressed the importance of signing only players equipped to handle the expectations of the club and its loyal supporters.

"We have to make sure that players coming into this club this summer can handle what this club expects and what the fans expect," he said. "The demands are massive. We have got to make sure we don't bring in anybody who can't handle the expectations of our club. That is so important."

Commenting on today's signing of striker Burrow, Gray said: "We have been monitoring him for a long time. He is exactly what we have been looking for. We are very fortunate to get him to come down to National League North as he is a player who could certainly play higher.

"When we spoke with him, he felt this club was the 'right' club. He wanted to part of something special and hopefully he can give us the goals that we need to get a promotion.

"He is an all-action type of centre-forward, he is hustle and bustle, his energy and work ethic are outstanding. I am sure, in this league, he will be a real, real nuisance to defenders."

On the return of former City captain Penn to the heart of the team's midfield, Gray said: "It's vital that we go into the new season with players from a higher level with great experience. We need more leadership within the squad and he is now settled in York with his family which is really important.

"I think he feels he has 'unfinished business' with the club. It's so important that people understand what the club is all about when they come in. He will hit the ground running."

Confirming his plans to strengthen again, Gray said: "We hope to have another big signing done by tomorrow (Thursday) who will help compliment goals going forward as well."
