Cummins: 'We have generated a nice atmosphere in the changing room'

By Dan Simmonite | 24th July 2019

Micky Cummins insists the team aren’t getting carried away after a 2-0 win over South Shields gave the Minstermen their fourth straight victory in pre-season.

Cummins believes that team cohesion is just as important as positive results, with Steve Watson’s assistant describing the club as a “positive place” going into the new campaign.

Speaking after the victory at Mariners Park he said: “Pre-season is all about fitness, you don’t get any points from today’s game, it’s about habits and making the right decisions.

“We are doing everything we have set out to do – albeit we had less bodies due to a couple of little niggles - but we are moving in the right direction and the lads are taking everything on board.”

He continued: “The lads are pushing themselves and pushing each other, they are really up for it and we have generated a nice atmosphere in the changing room.”

Two spot kicks in either half from club captain Jordan Burrow gave City the victory on South Tyneside yesterday with the tall frontman also connecting well with new strike partner Dan Maguire, who won both penalties.

Cummins added: “Nipa (Dan Maguire) was a threat and Jordan Burrow could have had three or four but the linkup play between the two was very pleasing.

“They will be up there [in their division] and for us it was a good test and something different from what we have been playing against.

“The opportunities they got in were due to a bit of lapse in concentration from ourselves so we need to stay switched on for the 90.”

City named three trialists in the team to face South Shields, with all three getting minutes on the pitch against the Northern Premier Division outfit.

However, Cummins insists that the club will only bring in more bodies if they match the current makeup of the squad, and they will have a chance to impress in the upcoming friendlies against both Notts County and Pickering Town.

He added: “We are still looking at them and seeing if they suit our group, but also doing them a favour by giving them minutes – I thought they did well again.”

“Saturday is going to be a different proposition, we have four or five of the lads available who weren’t tonight and they will be training on Thursday to put themselves in contention.”

Next up for City is Notts County this Saturday - kick off 12:30pm at Bootham Crescent and admission set as £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.
