City await Senior Cup semi-final draw

29th January 2020

York await confirmation of their North Riding Senior Cup semi-final opponents after they beat Whitby Town on penalties following an entertaining 2-2 draw.

The winners of the quarter-final between Scarborough Athletic and Redcar Athletic on February 11th will join Marske United, Thornaby and City in the draw.

Marske beat Middlesbrough U23’s 1-0 to reach the last four, while Thornaby overcame Yarm and Eaglescliffe in a 3-2 win.

City entered the competition at the round of 16 stage, and thrashed Pickering Town 5-0 at Bootham Crescent to set up the quarter-final with Whitby.

York exited the cup at the semi-final stage last season, as they were defeated by Scarborough on penalties following a 0-0 draw.

Scarborough went on to lift the trophy after another penalty shootout victory in the final – former City forward Michael Coulson was among the scorers in a 2-2 draw with Marske United.

The Minstermen have won the North Riding Senior Cup 11 times in their history, and last won the competition in 2010 when they beat Stokesley 2-0 in the final.

Middlesbrough are the most successful club in North Riding Senior Cup history, which was known as the Cleveland Cup until 1902, winning 55 titles since the inaugural competition in the 1881-82 season.

The cup is open to any club with an affiliation with the North Riding County FA, and involves teams as far down the football pyramid as the Northern Counties East Division One.

A draw takes place ahead of the final to decide which side plays at home.
