City complete deal for defender

6th October 2017

York City have completed the signing of defender David Ferguson from Darlington.

The 23-year-old has agreed a deal until the end of the 2018-2019 season and could make his debut in tomorrow's home game against Brackley Town.

City agreed to pay a release clause in Ferguson's contract in order to secure his signature.

Leftback Ferguson, 23, was playing in the Championship for Blackpool just two years ago. He started his career at Darlington and moved to the Premier League with Sunderland at the age of 18.

After three years at the Stadium of Light, he moved to Blackpool and was later appointed captain at Bloomfield Road.

He moved back to his native north-east in summer 2016 and played for Northern League side Shildon before joining Darlington last season. He has been capped twice at England C level.

Manager Martin Gray, who also moved from Darlington to York this week, said: "I know what David is all about and he knows what I am about. He is a left-sided player and the captain of the England C side. He was fantastic last season and has been doing well again this season. I am sure he will be a good asset to the club."

Gray, meanwhile, is not ruling out the possibility of further additions before tomorrow's game, saying: "We are looking, we are working hard, but we have got to make sure that the players we bring in are going to strengthen the squad. We are constantly on the phones and we are trying to do more business."
