Captain Newton signs new deal

By Ian Appleyard | 11th January 2018

Captain Sean Newton has today committed his future to York City Football Club by signing a two-year extension to his contract at Bootham Crescent.

Newton, who joined the Minstermen from Wrexham last season, will now be staying at the club until summer 2020.

"We have been speaking about it for the last couple of weeks but I got injured so I focused on getting fit," said Newton.  "Now I am fit, it's all been sorted, and I am delighted.

"I want to make sure I stay here as long as I can and help the club achieve what they want to achieve," he added. "There's a chance of going up this year and that's our goal."

Midfielder Newton, 29, says manager Martin Gray played a key role in his decision to stay at the club.

"Whenever a new Gaffer comes in, you don't know if he's going to take to you or how he is going to want to play the game - but I have enjoyed working with him from Day One. He wears his heart on his sleeve and it's been brilliant."

Gray, meanwhile, hailed Newton's decision as 'fantastic news' for the club, saying: "Sean is a leader who leads by example every day. It is fantastic news that he has committed his future to the club for another two-and-a-half years. He will play a big part in our plans and is still getting better as a player."
