'The best so far', according to Gray

By Ian Appleyard | 11th February 2018

Manager Martin Gray described Saturday's victory over Salford City as the 'best performance' since his arrival at the club four months ago.

A goal from Aidan Connolly settled an absorbing contest at Bootham Crescent and maintained City's push for promotion in Vanarama National League North.

"That was the best performance we have had in four months," said Gray afterwards. "The team performance, the desire, the hunger, and the fitness levels were fantastic. They have worked really hard and we are seeing the rewards now.

"The grit and the desire, especially in the last 15 minutes, is exactly what my teams are about. We had to be at our best - because we were playing against a very, very good team.

"We had to clear two off the line in the first 15-20 minutes and that set the theme," he added. "We had to do a lot of that and, as much as Aidan Connolly was fantastic for us, what the team did off the ball was even more important."

With an away trip to lowly Curzon Ashton next on the agenda for City, Gray also stressed the importance of staying level-headed despite this victory.

“We want to finish in the top three and we are seeing signs of improvement every week. But there will be no getting carried away. We’ve beaten the league leaders - but that’s all we’ve done. It is back to business on Monday morning, back on the training ground, and working hard to do the same a Curzon Ashton next week."
