Youth team come from behind to beat Fylde

By Bradley Saxton | 31st March 2022

The U19’s came from behind on Wednesday to secure a crucial 2-1 win over AFC Fylde in the National League Alliance Academy North.

After falling behind early on in the first-half at Wigginton Road, goals from Kieran Clayton and Jonny Shepherd in the second-half secured an impressive turnaround for Tim Ryan’s side.

The home side fell behind after only eight minutes when Maison Campbell was beaten at his front post from the right-hand side, after an impressive sequence of short passes from the visitors before breaking through on goal.

Fylde looked strong going forward in the final third within the first-half, but Maison Campbell made a couple of impressive saves to prevent the visitors from doubling their lead.

City struggled to get efforts away on goal in the first-half, but the nearest they came in the first forty-five minutes was through midfielder Max Ezard, who curled narrowly over the bar from a free-kick from the edge of the area.

City brought on midfielder Jack Degruchy at half-time and he nearly made an instant impact only two minutes into the second half. He received the ball on the edge of the edge of the penalty area from a low cross in by Kyle Lancaster, before he had a fierce effort kept out by the AFC Fylde keeper.

The Young Minstermen got back into their game twenty minutes into the second half, as Clayton headed home from point-blank range, after the visitors failed to clear away a free-kick played into the area.

With only eight minutes to go, City found their second goal of the afternoon which would ultimately secure all three points. Degruchy played a perfectly-timed through ball through to Shepherd, who finished low across the keeper to finish the ball into the bottom-left corner to hand York the lead.

City secured all three points which move them level with Fylde on points, despite remaining in fourth place in the league table.

Ryan’s side are back in action next Wednesday against Chester FC, where they will hope they can back up this performance with another win (1pm kick-off)
