Josh Knowles wants to push for first team

By Bradley Saxton | 26th September 2021

Josh Knowles is determined to make more matchday squads after featuring on the bench for the first team last weekend against Hebburn Town.

The 18-year-old was delighted to be included on the squad list for the Emirates FA Cup tie, a milestone achievement for the youth teamer who has progressed under the wing of Tim Ryan.

“Being on the bench last Saturday was a great experience for me, something which I want more of,” said Knowles.

“I was delighted to be there and included within the first-team squad.

“I know that I just need to keep working hard and training hard and see where it takes me”.

Knowles scored two goals for the U19’s last Wednesday, helping to seal a 3-0 win over FC Halifax Town in the National League U19 Alliance Academy North, adding to the goal he scored the week before in the FA Youth Cup against Farsley Celtic.

Speaking on the game, he said: “I’m happy with my performance. We got a win, a clean sheet and we scored three goals.

“I thought it was quite a sloppy performance, but we got the win.

“We will get back training on Friday and then prepare for next week’s cup game”.

Knowles started the game on the left wing but played majority of the second half as a striker, something which he feels he is a more suitable role for himself.

He added: “Playing left wing and striker is pretty similar, get the ball and attack the final third.

“Running at defenders, creating chances, and scoring goals is something I want to do.

“I feel more comfortable down the middle, but I’m happy to do anything for the team. If a shift is needed on the wing, I’m happy to do that.”

Next up for Josh Knowles is a trip to the Horsfall Stadium where Tim Ryan’s men take on Bradford (Park Avenue) in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night.

The second-year scholar will no doubt be looking to impress Steve Watson with the chance of FA Cup involvement against Whitby Town just three days later.
